Preserving a 400-Year Legacy
From the 17th-century frontier to the vibrant community of today
Founded in 2013, FAHF was established to continue the vital work of documenting our state’s early pioneers. While we celebrate the frontier era of explorers and voyageurs, our mission is to ensure the stories of the hundreds of thousands of French-speaking ancestors—who built Minnesota’s farms, towns, and institutions—are never forgotten.
Our Mission & Vision
Preserve
We conduct original historical research and publish scholarly resources, including the definitive, award-winning book series, They Spoke French.
Advance
We provide educational opportunities and fund annual grants to support new research, cultural projects, and preservation efforts across Minnesota.
Celebrate
We host community events, lectures, and cultural programs that connect our heritage with the present day, bringing these stories to life for new audiences.
The French Presence in Minnesota: A Deeply Rooted Heritage

Our foundation works to move beyond ‘voyageur’ stereotypes to document the lasting impact of French-Canadians who built Minnesota’s farms, towns, and civic institutions. Many of these family stories were nearly lost as ancestors assimilated and surnames were modified—such as Boisvert becoming Greenwood or LeBlanc becoming White. We are dedicated to rediscovering the roots of over 70 French-settled communities across the state.
Today, we celebrate a broad and inclusive heritage. Our mission serves those with deep French-Canadian and Métis roots, as well as the modern Francophone community including Belgian, Haitian, Cajun, and North or West African cultures. We ensure that this vibrant spirit remains a recognized part of Minnesota’s future.
The French-American story is a foundational thread in the fabric of Minnesota’s identity. While this influence began with the earliest explorers and mapmakers, the true legacy of the French-speaking people continued long after the frontier era, shaping the civic and cultural landscape of the state we know today.
